September Asters

I always enjoy all the lovely asters that grow wild around here, as a late season dash of colour.
Or usually...and I'm hoping it still might happen.
We've had such an unusually hot summer, that nothing is as it should be....or has been most other years.

The white asters, that grow as marvelous tall plants, started blooming a bunch of weeks ago, and are already starting to grow old.

When the wild roses are turning into rose-hips, and the golden rods are blooming, these dashes of white brighten all the greens.

So far, the purple asters have barely begun, and the ones I've seen are the palest of purples.

They're lacking the deeper colour they usually have.

The aster has not wasted spring and summer because it has not blossomed. 

It has been all the time preparing for what is to follow, and in autumn it is the glory of the field, and only the frost lays it low. 

So there are many people who must live forty or fifty years, and have the crude sap of their natural dispositions changed and sweetened before the blossoming time can come; but their lives have not been wasted.
